Planes that went missing years ago, along with their live pilots re-emerge in the Mexican desert and a long lost shipwreck is discovered. In a small town in the USA, impressive light phenomena are simultaneously observed in the sky and cast a special spell on the family man and electrician Roy Neary. When the government can hardly stop the media rumours about the appearance of aliens and UFOs, the scientist Claude Lacombe investigates the events. Roy Neary is increasingly haunted by visions he cannot interpret and which completely change his behaviour. He follows these intuitions and realizes that he is not alone in this. Together with a group of like-minded people from all parts of the country, he finally makes a spectacular discovery that puts everything in a new light.
World-renowned director Steven Spielberg's film is a science fiction adventure at the end of the analogue film era. With impressive special effects, the biggest UFO of the cinema screen of all times and a mystically exciting story, the still young Spielberg wrote film history.
