Summer is just around the corner in a working-class neighbourhood in Sweden. Sixteen-year-old Laura looks after her two younger sisters Mira and Steffi, who are all bursting with energy, daring and lust for life. When the youth welfare office announces regular visits, Laura has to find someone to pretend to be their mother, otherwise the girls are threatened with separation. Between the euphoria of freedom and the disillusionment of getting by on their own, the sisters defy the impositions of the adult world in order to preserve their own "Garden of Eden".

Mika Gustafson was born in Sweden in 1988 and graduated from the Valand Film Academy in 2016. In the same year, she was awarded the Nordic Talents Prize in Copenhagen. Her graduation film Mephobia won several awards, as did her documentary Silvana, which won the National Award for Best Documentary in 2017. Paradise is Burning is her first feature film.
