“Pure love prefers to turn away,” mumbles Ahmed during a class presentation, quoting a long-dead poet to whom he clearly relates. The 18-year-old son of Algerian refugees ,studying literature at the famed Sorbonne in Paris, finds himself stupefied and flushed the minute he lays eyes on Farah - a open minded, nosy and dangerously cool Tunisian girl with whom he shares some classes. Literature surprisingly bridges the long gap between them, as they seek out titles for their Arabic class. When they find an erotic Arabic book, their ideas about sex, desire, love, culture and belonging are simultaneously colliding as well as intertwining - not only contrasting with each other, but with an audience’s stereotypical views of the characters. Sensual as well as shy images, present Leyla Bouzid’s exploration of these two complex characters and open up the interstections of love, sex and Arabic art.
